CHAPTER 4: Ancient China
We will be moving east from Africa to Ancient China. We will begin by learning about China's geography and the importance of the Huang River. We will also learn about the different areas of China's vast amount of land. In addition, we will explore China's long history and its prominent dynasties, and its contribution to philosophical and religious thought, such as Confucianism and Daoism.

CHAPTER 5: South Asia
In this chapter, we will look closely at the Indian subcontinent and its neighbors. We will identify the major geographical landmarks and resources of this region, as well as its religious history. Two of the world's largest religions began here, including Hinduism and Buddhism.
CHAPTER 6: Mesoamerican Civilizations
Mesoamerica, meaning "middle America" begins in Southern Mexico and extends into the northern part of Central America. This area has a fascinating history. The varied landscape within this one area has led to the development of cultures that are similar and yet quite different. Students will examine three of the most well-known civilizations of this area: the Olmec, the Maya, and the Aztec.

CHAPTER 7: The Early Peoples of South America
As we glimpsed in Chapter 6, there was a rich cultural history in the Americas even before Europeans discovered this land. In this chapter, we will move south to the continent of South America. Continuing along our theme, we will examine how culture has been affected by geography, and how empires, namely the Inca, have developed in this part of the world.

CHAPTER 8: Early North American Peoples
Although we've learned about the land bridge that brought early hunter-gatherers to the Americas, we have not looked at how those societies developed. In this unit, we will identify the geography and resources of the early peoples of North America. These people lived in present-day America and Canada. We will also study a variety of Native American peoples, including the Hohokam, the Anasazi, the Adena, the Hopewell, the Mississipians, the Iroquois, and the Algonquin.

In this unit, students will analyze how geography, particularly its ties to the sea, affected ancient Greece. They will learn about the rich history of the Greek civilizations, including the beginning of democracy and the myths and legends incorporated into their lifestyles. Finally, students will examine how ancient Greek ideals and thoughts influenced the development of Western democracy and philosophy.

CHAPTER 10: Ancient Rome
As they did with Ancient Greece, students will identify the key features of Roman government, culture, and social structure. They will also evaluate how effective they found the Roman government, and its strengths and weaknesses relative both to our government and other Asian and early American governments they have studied. Finally, students will examine how the Romans too influenced Western democracy and philosophy.
